Safety Questions Answered. Your most common safety questions, answered with transparency
We follow a comprehensive incident response protocol. First, the injured child receives immediate first aid from our trained educators. We assess the severity and contact you immediately; for minor injuries via phone, for serious injuries, we call you first, then emergency services if needed. Every incident is documented in detail, and you’ll receive a written incident report the same day. We also conduct a post-incident review to identify any improvements we can make to prevent similar incidents.
Every child with allergies has an Individual Risk Minimisation Plan developed in partnership with families. We display ASCIA Action Plans prominently, maintain allergen-free zones, provide alternative meals, and ensure all staff are trained in EpiPen administration. Visual allergy identification systems help all staff quickly recognise children with allergies. We communicate with families about any potential allergen exposure and maintain multiple EpiPens in accessible locations throughout the centre.
We conduct quarterly evacuation drills covering various scenarios (fire, gas leak, bomb threat). When an alarm sounds, educators immediately gather their groups, conduct head counts, and evacuate to designated assembly points via marked routes. We take attendance records and emergency contact information with us. Once at the assembly point, we conduct another head count and verify that all children and staff are accounted for. We then contact emergency services and notify families. Our staff are trained in evacuation leadership, and we have backup procedures if primary exits are blocked.
Every staff member undergoes rigorous screening before their first day: Working with Children Check verified through the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian, National Police Certificate – National Police Check – If applicable, minimum three professional references (verified by phone), qualification verification (Certificate III or higher in Early Childhood Education), identity and work history confirmation, and probationary period with ongoing assessment. Blue Cards are re-verified every three years, and all staff undergo annual performance reviews to ensure ongoing competency and compliance.
We maintain “active supervision” at all times, which means educators are positioned to see and hear all children, scanning frequently, and ready to intervene immediately. We exceed minimum educator-to-child ratios, conduct head counts before every transition, and use documented supervision handovers when children move between educators. For high-risk activities like swimming, we use specialised ratios (1:4) and additional supervision layers. Educators position themselves strategically to maximise visibility, and we use zones of supervision in outdoor areas to ensure no blind spots.
We use a trauma-informed, positive guidance approach. When incidents occur (hitting, biting, pushing), we immediately ensure all children are safe, provide comfort and first aid if needed, and help children understand the impact of their actions. We teach alternative behaviours, problem-solving skills, and emotional regulation strategies. Both families are notified confidentially, and we work collaboratively on behaviour guidance plans if needed. We never use physical punishment, time-outs, or shaming. Our focus is on teaching, not punishing, while ensuring all children feel safe.
Absolutely! We believe in complete transparency. All our safety policies are available for review during tours, and we provide copies of key policies during the enrollment process. You can also request specific policies at any time. We review and update our policies annually with input from families, staff, and regulatory requirements. Our policies cover emergency management, incident response, safe sleep, medication administration, child protection, supervision, behaviour guidance, and more.
All educators complete comprehensive training, including: HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) renewed annually, CPR training, anaphylaxis management and EpiPen administration, emergency asthma management, mandatory reporting and child protection, protective behaviours program, safe sleep practices, infection control and hygiene, food safety, and trauma-informed care. We also provide ongoing professional development on emerging safety topics, risk assessment, and behaviour guidance strategies.
