As the weather warms up across Gregory Hills this October, nature play comes into its own at Saige Early Learning. Spending time outdoors is far more than a nice break from the indoor routine — nature play supports children’s physical health, emotional regulation and sense of wonder, all at once. Here is why we weave nature play into our programme every day, and how families can bring a little more of it home.

Why Nature Play Supports Wellness

Time outdoors does a great deal of quiet work for young children. Nature play:

 – Helps lower stress and supports a calm, settled mood

– Builds gross motor skills through climbing, balancing and running on uneven ground

– Encourages curiosity, observation and problem-solving

– Provides healthy exposure to natural light and fresh air

– Supports more restful sleep later in the day

**Children who have regular, unstructured time outdoors tend to be more settled, more curious and more physically confident.** It is one of the simplest and most effective tools we have in early childhood education.

Our Nature Play Program at Saige Early Learning

Nature play looks different every day at Saige Early Learning, depending on the weather and what catches a child’s interest:

 – Mud kitchen and water play in our outdoor area

– Garden beds that children help plant, water and harvest

– Nature scavenger hunts around the centre grounds

– Loose parts play using sticks, rocks, leaves and other natural materials

– Quiet nature nooks for children who want a calmer, slower pace

Bringing Nature Play Home

Families often ask how to extend nature play beyond the centre. A few simple ideas:

 – A short walk around the block, noticing textures, smells and sounds

– A small pot of herbs on a windowsill or balcony

– A backyard treasure hunt for leaves, rocks or flowers

– Bare feet on the grass when it is safe to do so

Nature play does not need special equipment or a big backyard — just a little unstructured time outdoors.

If you would like to see how nature play features in your child’s day at Saige Early Learning, we would love to show you around.
