Book Week is one of the most joyful times of the year in early learning, and it’s the perfect moment to talk about cultural diversity in early learning. At Saige Early Learning in Gregory Hills, our educators used this year’s Book Week theme, “Symphony of Stories,” as a springboard to explore books from cultures right across our community. This post shares why cultural diversity in early learning matters so much, and how our educators bring it to life through stories all through September and beyond.
Why Cultural Diversity in Early Learning Starts With Stories
Children build their understanding of the world through the stories they hear. When a programme reflects cultural diversity in early learning, children see themselves — and their friends — represented on the page. This builds a strong sense of belonging and helps children develop empathy for people whose backgrounds differ from their own.
A few reasons this matters:
– Children recognise and value their own culture and language
– Children learn that difference is normal and something to celebrate
– Families feel welcomed and represented within the service
– Educators can open conversations about traditions, festivals and everyday life from around the world
Book Week at Saige Early Learning
Gregory Hills is home to families from many cultural backgrounds, and our Book Week celebrations reflected that. Our educators gathered picture books featuring characters, languages and traditions from across the globe, then invited children to share stories, songs and words from their own homes.
A favourite moment this year: children took turns saying “hello” in the languages spoken at home, then went looking for a book to match.
How Families Can Keep the Conversation Going
Cultural diversity in early learning doesn’t stop when Book Week ends. Families can keep sharing stories from different cultures at home, borrowing books from the local library, or asking their child’s educator for a recommendation.
– Visit your local library for a multicultural picture book display
– Share a favourite family story or recipe with your child’s group
– Ask your educator which books the group has been enjoying lately
– Encourage your child to teach a word or two from home to a friend
