At Saige Early Learning in Gregory Hills, we are combining two of our favourite things this August: celebrating special father figures and building phonics activities for children into every part of the fun.

Learning Through What Children Love

Children learn letters and sounds far more readily when the content genuinely matters to them, and few things matter more than the people they love. Our phonics activities for children this month are built entirely around family stories, helping children:

– Connect letter sounds to meaningful, personal vocabulary

– Practise retelling family stories with growing confidence

– Build a positive, joyful association with early literacy

– Strengthen the bond between home and centre learning

At Saige Early Learning, we find that phonics activities for children stick best when they are wrapped up in a story that matters.

Our Father Figure Phonics Program

Letter Hunt: D is for Dad

Children search the room for objects and pictures beginning with the letter D, talking about their own special person along the way.

Family Story Dictation

Children dictate a short story about their father figure to an educator, who writes it down, and then children practise “reading” their own words back, building genuine print awareness.

Sound Matching Games

Using photographs and simple word cards linked to family members, children match beginning sounds in a playful, low-pressure format.

Handmade Alphabet Books

Children create a page for a class alphabet book, choosing a letter and drawing something that reminds them of their special person.

Extending Phonics Play at Home

Families can build on our phonics activities for children at home by playing simple “I spy” games with beginning sounds, telling stories about family members together, or labelling favourite objects around the house.

At Saige Early Learning, we love watching children light up when literacy learning is woven together with the people who matter most to them, proof that the best lessons often come wrapped in love.
